About

I am an artist, raised in the South, Alabama and Louisiana, sojourning for some years in the high desert of California and returning this spring of 2023 to my southern roots. Drawing and nature were my earliest passions.

I work mostly in oils but also watercolor, gouache, pencil, and pen and ink. My subjects are generally landscapes, portraits, flowers and other natural things, although I also enjoy architecture. Some of my work, describing inner visions, is more abstract. I am intrigued, among other things, by water, reflections, and by extreme light and shadow. In recent years I've also done botanical illustrations for scientific journals as well as other nature-related book illustrations.

In college and graduate school I studied biology, language and history, later returning to art and eventually focusing on painting. My art and academic training, sponsored largely by scholarship, were at Sophie Newcomb College and Tulane Graduate School in New Orleans (BA zoology, MA history, BFA ceramics); the Goethe Institute in Murnau, Germany (German language); Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany (medicine), University of Alabama Graduate School, Tuscaloosa, AL (painting) and Maharishi International University in Fairfield, Iowa (MA painting, 2000).
